Utah Youth Soccer Rankings: The Complete Parent's Guide (2026)

A U15 team from South Weber and a U15 team from Orem train at opposite ends of the same freeway. Most of Utah's competitive soccer lives along that one strip of the Wasatch Front — Davis County, the Salt Lake Valley and Utah County — so the state's best teams are rarely far apart. And yet the games that shape their ratings are mostly played somewhere else: Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and California.

That's Utah youth soccer. The clubs are concentrated, the schedules are not. Your league record tells you how you did against the Utah teams in your flight. Rankings are how you find out what it means against everyone else your team plays.

Why Utah Soccer Rankings Matter

Utah has an unusually top-heavy club landscape. Two clubs — La Roca FC and Utah Avalanche — hold 81 of the state's 207 ranked teams, and they are the only Utah clubs in the top tier of the ECNL. Below them sit a handful of clubs with MLS NEXT or Girls Academy teams, then a long list of smaller programs. When most of a strong team's season is spent out of state, two Utah records can look alike while meaning very different things.

Rankings give you three things standings can't:

  1. Cross-club context — How does your Utah Avalanche team actually compare to a La Roca FC side, a Wasatch SC team from Davis County or a Utah Celtic team from Utah County?
  2. Informed club decisions — At tryouts, rankings let you compare La Roca, Utah Avalanche, City SC Utah, Utah Celtic and Park City SC on one scale instead of on reputation.
  3. Realistic expectations — Winning your local flight is a starting point. ECNL, MLS NEXT, Girls Academy and the Utah State Cup are where the number gets tested.

The Utah Youth Soccer Landscape

We track 1,770 Utah teams that have played in the past year. Of those, 207 have played enough games to carry a published ranking — that's the number behind every table on this page. A team needs enough recorded results before its rating means anything, and most Utah teams, especially at the younger ages, haven't reached that yet.

Geographic Soccer Regions

  • Davis County / Northern Wasatch Front — La Roca FC (42 ranked teams) is the state's largest club by ranked teams. Its head office and Center of Excellence, La Roca Park, are in South Weber, and it runs 150+ teams across five regions of Utah, including a family park in Lehi. Wasatch SC (16) is based in Kaysville.
  • Salt Lake Valley — Utah Avalanche (39 ranked teams) has its new indoor facility in South Jordan and has expanded into west Utah County. City SC Utah (16), formerly Utah Soccer Alliance, serves the South Valley and the Salt Lake City metro. Real Salt Lake's academy trains at the Zions Bank Real Academy in Herriman, and Impact United and 7 Elite Academy are based in Salt Lake City.
  • Utah County — Utah Celtic FC (13 ranked teams) and Utah Surf (10) are both Utah County clubs; Utah Surf lists Highland, Orem and Southern Utah as its home areas.
  • Park City / Summit County — Park City SC (13 ranked teams) is the one major club on the far side of the Wasatch, and it plays the most in-state schedule of any big Utah club (more on that below).

Leagues Active in Utah

Utah has the full national-league ladder, almost all of it along the Wasatch Front. Here's where each league sits for the 2026-27 season:

  • ECNL — La Roca FC and Utah Avalanche field both boys and girls teams. Their boys play in the ECNL Mountain conference alongside Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico clubs; their girls play in the ECNL Northwest conference with clubs from Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
  • ECNL Regional League — Boys teams from La Roca FC, Utah Avalanche, NUU Avalanche and Utah Athletic; girls teams from La Roca FC, Utah Avalanche, NUU Avalanche and Utah Surf, all in the Mountain conference.
  • MLS NEXT — Real Salt Lake in the Homegrown Division, and City SC Utah, Sparta United, Wasatch SC and Utah Celtic FC in the Academy Division.
  • Girls Academy (GA) — City SC Utah, Utah Celtic FC and Wasatch SC, with Utah Celtic, Wasatch SC, Impact United and 7 Elite Academy in GA's Aspire league.
  • National 1 League — The league US Club Soccer and US Youth Soccer formed for 2026-27 by bringing together the National Premier Leagues (NPL) and US Youth Soccer's National League. In Utah it runs as its own district covering the whole state, and teams that qualify for Premier 1 for 2026-27 are placed in it automatically.

Plus state-level competition through the Utah Soccer Federation (USYS Utah), the US Youth Soccer state association, which runs the Utah State Cup.

How Utah Soccer Rankings Actually Work

Most ranking systems — GotSoccer being the biggest — award points for where a team places in tournaments and league flights, which can reward volume over quality. A team that enters 15 events and wins weak brackets can outrank a team that plays a harder schedule at fewer events.

That's not how PitchRank works.

What PitchRank Tracks for Utah Teams

We track every game we can find — league play, tournaments, friendlies, showcases — across all 1,770 Utah teams we follow.

Here's the short version of how your team's ranking is calculated:

  1. Base rating — Every team starts neutral and moves with each game played
  2. Strength of schedule — Beating a top ECNL side means more than beating a developmental team. Losing to a strong opponent hurts less than losing to a weak one.
  3. Recency — Last month's games count more than games from 10 months ago
  4. Consistency — Steady performance ranks higher than wild swings between blowout wins and bad losses

The result is a PowerScore between 0.0 and 1.0 that lets you compare teams within the same age group at a glance.

Utah's Age Group Breakdown

Ranked Utah teams by age group:

U103
U1114
U1210
U1312
U1437
U1533
U1629
U1725
U1944

U19 is the deepest ranked pool in the state, followed by U14 and U15. We actually track more Utah teams at U11 (240) and U13 (235) than at U14 (220); older teams simply play more of the league and showcase games we record, so more of them qualify for a ranking. If your child is in U13 or younger, expect a small ranked board and a ranking that firms up as the season goes on.

Note that PitchRank files U18 teams into U19, so the U19 board covers both.

What Your Utah Team's Ranking Actually Tells You

You check PitchRank and see your U15 team is ranked #8 in Utah. What does that mean?

State vs National Rankings

  • State rank — Where your team stands among Utah teams in the same age group and gender
  • National rank — Where your team stands among all teams in that age group and gender nationwide

Reality check: Utah's ranked boards are small, so a state rank is drawn from a short list — at U10 there are three ranked teams across boys and girls combined. Because Utah's top teams play most of their recorded games against out-of-state opponents, their results are well connected to the national picture, and the national rank is often the more informative number.

Age Group Matters More Than You Think

Rankings aren't comparable across age groups. A U12 team ranked #5 in Utah isn't in the same position as a U14 team ranked #5. Why?

  • Competition density — U14 has 37 ranked teams; U12 has 10
  • Development stages — Rankings are more volatile in younger age groups
  • Playing up — Some teams compete a year up for tougher games, which changes what their record means

Pro tip: Always check your specific age group when looking at Utah soccer rankings.

What Rankings Don't Tell You

Rankings measure competitive results. They can't measure:

  • Individual player development — A top-ranked team might not be the right fit for your child's growth
  • Coaching quality — Some lower-ranked teams have better developmental coaches than win-now programs
  • Team culture — Your kid's enjoyment matters more than a number
  • College fit — D3 coaches care about GPA and character more than PowerScore

If a club director sells you on rankings alone but can't explain their development philosophy, that's a red flag.

How to Use Utah Rankings When Choosing a Club

Rankings are one tool at tryout time — here's how to use them well.

Questions to Ask Club Directors

When you're comparing La Roca vs Utah Avalanche, or City SC Utah vs Utah Celtic vs Wasatch SC:

  1. "How do your teams' rankings trend over time?" — Upward trends suggest good coaching. Flat or declining suggests stagnation.
  2. "What's the strength of schedule for this age group?" — Are they playing real competition or filling the calendar with easy brackets?
  3. "Which league does this team actually play in?" — In Utah the same club can have an ECNL team, an ECNL Regional League team and state-league teams in one age group, and they face very different opponents.
  4. "How many players from this group have moved into ECNL, MLS NEXT or Girls Academy rosters?" — Player progression matters more than team rank.

Finding the Right Competition Level

The best team for your child isn't always the highest-ranked one. Look for a team that:

  • Plays opponents 10–20 ranking positions above AND below them
  • Gives your child 30+ minutes per game
  • Challenges without crushing confidence
  • Fits your family's travel budget and schedule

Red Flags

  • Cherry-picking opponents — Teams that pad records against the same weak flight. Their ranking will plateau.
  • Wild ranking swings — Could signal roster instability or inconsistent coaching
  • Ranking guarantees — No legitimate club can promise a specific ranking

Utah Plays the Mountain West

Here's the number that makes Utah different. Of the 4,274 games we've recorded for ranked Utah teams over the past year, only about two in five (40%) were against other Utah teams. Colorado opponents account for 11%, Arizona for 9%, Nevada for 8%, California for 7% and Idaho for 6%. Teams from the six neighbouring states together make up 37% of the schedule — nearly as much as Utah itself.

Each club leans a different way:

  • City SC Utah plays a quarter of its recorded games against Colorado teams, and La Roca FC 16%.
  • Wasatch SC and Utah Celtic FC each play about a fifth of their games against Nevada teams, and Utah Celtic another 16% against Arizona.
  • Park City SC is the exception among the big clubs: 61% of its recorded games are against Utah teams.
  • Real Salt Lake's ranked academy teams played none of their 45 recorded games against Utah opponents — their schedule runs through Texas, California and the rest of the national academy circuit.

What that means for parents:

  • A Utah team's schedule is rarely Utah-only, so its ranking is tied to opponents from across the Mountain West. That tends to make the number more reliable, not less — more distinct opponents means a better-supported rating.
  • Two Utah teams that never play each other can still be compared, because they share opponents in Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and Idaho.
  • If your team plays only inside its own local flight, treat the ranking as provisional. State Cup and out-of-state events are where it gets confirmed.

Utah State Cup and Rankings

The Utah Soccer Federation runs a fall State Cup for boys 13U–18/19U and a spring State Cup for boys 11U–12U and girls 11U–19U. It is open to teams registered with the federation that play in its State Competition Program, and teams from a member club outside that program can enter for an additional $400 fee. For 13U and older, last year's State Cup champion is the top seed and last season's Premier 1 champion the second seed; boys ECNL and "MLS Next 2" teams, and girls ECNL and GA teams, are then drawn at random from third seed down (ECNL Regional League and GA Aspire teams are not included), and every other team is seeded by the federation's most recent alignment. Utah teams that win State Cup in the 13U through 18/19U age groups represent Utah in the US Youth Soccer National Championships.

Where rankings fit in:

  • Seeding — Your league placement and alignment, not your ranking, decide where your team is seeded. Rankings show how that placement compares with teams outside your division
  • Competition quality — State Cup puts ECNL, MLS NEXT, Girls Academy and state-league teams into the same brackets, which rarely happens during the league season
  • Exposure — It's one of the few weekends where Utah's top programs are measured against each other under real stakes

If your team is ranked in the top 10–15% in Utah, State Cup is where that number gets tested against the rest of the state.

The College Recruiting Reality Check

Let's be honest about what Utah rankings mean for recruiting.

What Coaches Actually Look At

  1. Individual highlight video — YOUR child, not team stats
  2. Academic eligibility — NCAA initial eligibility is based on core-course GPA, not test scores, and each college adds its own admission standards
  3. Showcase attendance — ECNL, MLS NEXT and Girls Academy events, where coaches can see many teams in one weekend
  4. Direct contact — Emails to coaches with video links beat high rankings

Rankings by Division

  • Division I — Coaches notice teams in the top 5% nationally
  • Division II — Top 15–20% nationally gets attention, but individual performance matters more
  • Division III — Rankings barely factor in. Academics, character, and fit drive decisions.

Utah's reality: because Utah's top teams already play most of their recorded games out of state, the state's leading programs are measured against Mountain West and West Coast competition every season. Once your child hits U15, the national rank is the more useful number for recruiting conversations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Utah youth soccer teams ranked?

PitchRank ranks Utah teams using a rating algorithm that evaluates game-by-game results, strength of schedule, goal differential, recency, and consistency. Rankings update every Monday and currently cover 207 ranked Utah teams drawn from 1,770 we track statewide.

What are the biggest youth soccer clubs in Utah?

By ranked team count: La Roca FC (42), Utah Avalanche (39), Wasatch SC (16), City SC Utah (16), Utah Celtic FC (13), Park City SC (13) and Utah Surf (10).

Does Utah have ECNL and MLS NEXT teams?

Yes. La Roca FC and Utah Avalanche field ECNL boys and girls teams, and both also field ECNL Regional League teams, along with NUU Avalanche, Utah Athletic and Utah Surf. MLS NEXT runs through Real Salt Lake, whose academy trains in Herriman, in the Homegrown Division and through City SC Utah, Sparta United, Wasatch SC and Utah Celtic FC in the Academy Division. Girls Academy teams play through City SC Utah, Utah Celtic FC and Wasatch SC.

Why do Utah teams play so many out-of-state games?

Of the 4,274 games we've recorded for ranked Utah teams over the past year, only about two in five were against other Utah teams. Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, California and Idaho opponents make up most of the rest, because Utah's ECNL, MLS NEXT and Girls Academy teams play in conferences that span the western states. That spread ties Utah rankings closely to the national picture.

How does the Utah State Cup work?

The Utah Soccer Federation runs a fall State Cup for boys 13U–18/19U and a spring State Cup for boys 11U–12U and girls 11U–19U. From 13U up, last year's champion and last season's Premier 1 champion take the top two seeds, boys ECNL and MLS Next 2 teams and girls ECNL and GA teams are drawn into the next seeds, and everyone else is seeded by league alignment. State Cup winners in the 13U through 18/19U age groups represent Utah at the US Youth Soccer National Championships.
